Visit to Sterling, America

A few weeks ago, we made a road trip to Sterling to see Great Grandma Allen. We had a great time visiting with her, and the kids were thrilled that she had some fruit snacks stocked for them! Here they are with her:
We ventured out to her yard and marveled at the enormous leaves on her tree.
After our visit was over, we stopped at a cute little ice cream drive-up place in Sterling and got these enormous cones for only 85cents each!

We took our cones a few blocks to the lake to enjoy the beautiful (obviously sunny!) day.
Mitzi even got to partake when Breckyn's ice cream fell off her cone and slid down the hill! We had to hurry before they melted!

We spent some time playing near the lake.

But it was a special thrill when we found a bloated gopher floating near the bank!
And we just had to stop at this beautiful sunflower field outside of Sterling.

What a great trip!

Cow Appreciation Day!!

On July 10th, we celebrated Cow Appreciation Day! If it's not yet a national holiday, it should be!! My friend Dana had told me that Chick-fil-a does this appreciation day every year - all you have to do is dress up like a cow and you get free food! So, we gathered the troops (including our neighbor boy Braden), dressed them up like little calves (I took white t-shirts and hotglued black fabric dots all over and pink fabric udders to the fronts), and herded them to the nearest Wichita Chick-fil-a which is, unfortunately, the ONLY Wichita Chick-fil-a. It is very inconveniently located in the Student Center of WSU, but we went, and we weren't the only ones! There was definite camaraderie amongst all the people that braved the laughter and walked across campus to moo for some free food. Speaking of the food, I had the grilled chicken sandwich, the kids had nuggets, we all had waffle fries, and it was DELICIOUS!! Needless to say, I have my cow shirt carefully tucked away for next time!!

Preston was not thrilled about his pink udder - can you tell?!
the Hamby Holsteins!

a nice lady, impressed with our enthusiasm for looking like fools to get free food, volunteered to snap a picture of our group: Braden, Preston, Kellyn, Ava, Dana, me, and Breckyn
